Vassilios T Wreck

About This Site
The Vassilios T is a roughly 105 m Greek cargo steamer (ex-Eastern Temple, built 1920 in Japan) that struck the cliffs of Cape Stupišće in March 1939 while carrying a load of coal from Swansea to Venice. It is one of the largest and best-preserved shipwrecks in the Adriatic, lying intact on its port side down the slope: the bow and upper deck begin around 22-35 m within advanced recreational range, while the propeller and lower hull reach about 45-55 m in the technical range. Its size means a single dive only samples the wreck, and most divers return repeatedly to explore it fully.

The wreck sits at the foot of the cliffs on Cape Stupišće, the southwest extremity of Vis, an outer island facing the open Adriatic. The widest open window runs from west through northwest, straight into the W-NW swell that Bura (Bora) and passing Adriatic lows drive down the sea, and a second southerly window (S-SSW) admits the long fetch of the SE Jugo (Sirocco), the dominant swell-maker along the Adriatic's SE-NW axis. Between those two windows the southwest sector is roughly half-blocked by Biševo island about 5 km offshore, which softens SW swell but still leaves the cape an exposure-driven site diveable only in settled weather. The landward sectors from northeast round to southeast are shadowed by the Vis landmass and the cape itself.
