About This Site
Blue Cave (Modra špilja) is the Vis area's most famous non-wreck site: a flooded sea cavern in Balun bay on the east side of Biševo island, roughly 5 km southwest of Vis. It is renowned for the glowing aquamarine light that floods the chamber when mid- to late-morning sun (typically around 11:00 to noon) reflects off the white pebble bottom through a submerged opening, turning the water electric blue and silhouetting swimmers and fish in silver. The cavern is about 24 m long, up to 15 m high and 12 m wide, with water around 16 m deep at its deepest and a submerged rock arch near 6 m. It is a short, shallow cavern dive or snorkel suitable for most levels and counts among Dalmatia's signature underwater attractions.

The cavern opens roughly eastward from Balun bay on the seaward face of Biševo, an outer island in the open Adriatic, so it is most exposed to the E, ESE and SE quadrant. The Jugo (Sirocco) blowing up from the SE along the Adriatic axis is the dominant swell-maker here and is the wind that most often closes the site, with the white-bottomed chamber amplifying any incoming surge through its low entrance. The bulk of Biševo shadows the W and NW sectors, while neighbouring Vis to the NE partly limits Bura (Bora) fetch from the NE/ENE, though gusty offshore Bura still chops the channel.
