About This Site
An easy, calm and very popular dive on one of Italy's best-known underwater statues. A roughly 3 m bronze figure of Padre Pio (canonised as San Pio), sculpted by Foggia artist Mimmo Norcia, was lowered onto a concrete base here on 3 October 1998. It stands with arms open and gaze raised to the surface in the sheltered 'Gli Scoglietti' channel, with the statue resting at about 12-13 m. The crystal-clear, almost always flat water and shallow depth make it a favourite for divers of every level, snorkellers and underwater photographers alike.

The statue sits in the sheltered 'Gli Scoglietti' strait, hemmed in by San Nicola close to the east, Cretaccio just to the west-southwest and the bulk of San Domino beyond it, so the landward sectors are almost fully blocked and the site is famously calm. The only meaningful fetch reaches it through the channel mouth to the north and northwest, where a Tramontana (N) or Maestrale (NW) can push a short wind-chop; the Bora, a NE wind, is largely shadowed by San Nicola. Scirocco (S-SE) swell, normally the biggest in this part of the Adriatic, only leaks weakly through the narrow southern mouth and stays largely shadowed by San Nicola.
