Secca delle Vedove sits off the north-west flank of Caprara, with the island body to the east and south-east shielding it from the Adriatic's biggest fetch. The dominant Scirocco/Jugo swell running up the NW-SE axis from the south-east is largely land-shadowed here by Caprara, and the Bura from the NE is blocked by the island's NW tip, so the exposed window is the open Adriatic to the W-NW-N. The Maestral (NW afternoon wind) and any NW-N sea build straight onto the site, which is where the surface chop and swell come from; a strong Maestral or a Bura swell wrapping the northern tip can make the shoal untenable and reinforce current over the caps. As a mostly submerged seamount it is rarely troubled otherwise, and in settled summer weather it offers the clear, calm conditions the Tremiti are known for.
