Scuba diving at Scoglio del Corvo in Tremiti Islands

About This Site
Scoglio del Corvo ("Crow's Rock") is one of the classic advanced dives of the Tremiti Islands, sitting off the exposed western/southwestern point of the uninhabited Capraia (Caprara) island. A submerged rocky promontory drops away in a steep, near-vertical wall that plunges past 40 m to a base around 50 m, cut by canyons and cracks. The wall is a signature of the archipelago's marine flora: dense curtains of yellow Parazoanthus, sponges and gorgonians on the upper faces, and at the base a carpet of Mediterranean soft corals (alcyonarians) that tile the rock in vivid colour. Set on an exposed outer corner in the reserve's typically clear Adriatic water, it draws current and the pelagics that come with it — passing barracuda, amberjack and other predators — making it a bucket-list wall dive reserved for experienced divers.

Scoglio del Corvo sits on the exposed western/southwestern corner of Capraia, open to the Adriatic across the W-WNW-WSW arc, which is the site's full-exposure window and the reason it is best dived in settled weather. The bulk of Capraia island shields it from the E through SE, so the Adriatic's biggest waves — the long-fetch Scirocco/Jugo from the SE — are largely blocked, and to the south the neighbouring islands of San Nicola (~1 km) and San Domino (~2.8 km SW) further break down the S-SSW-SW sectors. The site turns rough under W and NW winds (the afternoon Maestrale) and under any sustained westerly blow, which build surface chop straight onto the wall and reinforce the current that makes the dive demanding.
