About This Site
The most famous sea cave of San Domino and a classic Tremiti cavern dive and snorkel stop, reachable only by boat. A roughly 70 m long, up to 14 m high rocky cavity at the foot of the Ripa dei Falconi cliff that glows an electric blue from sunlight bouncing off its shallow sandy floor, with the dark inner chamber narrowing to a small beach. It was the last refuge of the Mediterranean monk seal (the "bue marino") in these waters until the late 1950s. Outside the cave the dive is easy and atmospheric over a boulder-strewn slope; surge picks up sharply inside the cavern.

The site sits in Cala del Bue Marino on the west-southwest coast of San Domino, below the Ripa dei Falconi cliff, facing the open Adriatic to the WSW. The bulk of San Domino and the rest of the archipelago shadow the entire eastern half, so it is sheltered from the Bora (NE) and the long-fetch Scirocco/Jugo (SE) that drive the biggest Adriatic seas. Its real exposure is to W-SW Libeccio wind-waves and the NW Maestrale, and the cove's narrow cavern amplifies any incoming surge once swell wraps in.
