Secca di Punta Secca (Gli Archi)

Tremiti IslandsBoat
About This Site
The signature dive of the Tremiti Islands and routinely ranked among the ten best dives in Italy and the Mediterranean. An offshore shoal off the eastern point of Capraia (Caprara), its top (the 'cappetto') rises to about 6 m before plunging down a sheer vertical wall past 50 m. The site is famous for two natural rock arches ('Gli Archi') and a 'Garden of Gorgonians' around 35 m. It is a demanding deep dive with strong, near-constant current, drawing experienced and technical divers; a shallower 'Le Gorgonie' profile (to roughly 38 m) shares the same mooring for non-tech deep divers.

An exposed offshore shoal off the eastern tip of Capraia (Caprara) facing the open Adriatic, so the eastern semicircle (NE through SE) is fully unsheltered while Capraia and the rest of the archipelago shadow the western/landward sectors (W-SW). The dominant exposures are the Scirocco (SE), which has the longest Adriatic fetch and builds the biggest waves, and the Bora (NE-ENE), a strong cold wind that whips up steep wind-chop over open water. Combined with strong, near-constant tidal/oceanographic current sweeping the pinnacle, surface conditions at the secca turn rough quickly on any easterly wind.
