An exposed offshore shoal off the eastern tip of Capraia (Caprara) facing the open Adriatic, so the eastern semicircle (NE through SE) is fully unsheltered while Capraia and the rest of the archipelago shadow the western/landward sectors (W-SW). The dominant exposures are the Scirocco (SE), which has the longest Adriatic fetch and builds the biggest waves, and the Bora (NE-ENE), a strong cold wind that whips up steep wind-chop over open water. Combined with strong, near-constant tidal/oceanographic current sweeping the pinnacle, surface conditions at the secca turn rough quickly on any easterly wind.
