About This Site
Bezdan (Rt Bezdan) is the signature dive of Koločep, the southernmost of the Elafiti islands off Dubrovnik, and the most-cited site on the island. Its name means "the abyss" in Croatian, and it lives up to it: beneath the lighthouse on the island's southern cape the seabed drops from a sunlit shallow reef of 15-35 ft in a sheer wall that plunges past the recreational limit toward a documented 185 ft (57 m) abyss. The dive packs three signature features into one point — a large sunlit swim-through cave in the shallows, the dramatic wall itself, and the small two-masted coaster wreck Aurora resting at around 55-60 ft. That variety, in generally clear, calm Adriatic water only a few minutes by boat from Koločep's dive centres, makes it a rewarding intermediate dive and a bucket-list stop for anyone diving the Dubrovnik islands.

Bezdan sits on the fully exposed southern cape of Kolocep, open to the Adriatic across the whole southern arc. The dominant threat is the Jugo (Scirocco) from the SE, which has the longest fetch along the sea's NW-SE axis and drives the biggest waves and surge directly onto this point - the SE-S-SW sectors are wide open and set the site's rough-day limit. The bulk of Kolocep to the north and northwest shelters it from the Bura (NE) and the afternoon Maestral (NW), which arrive as offshore or blocked winds, and the Dubrovnik mainland a few kilometres to the east limits fetch from that side. In practice the dive is calm in settled summer weather but is among the first Kolocep sites to close out when a southerly is running.
