About This Site
The deep gorgonian section of the Secche di Tor Paterno Marine Protected Area, dived from mooring buoys 7 and 8 in the southern part of the shoal. From the Posidonia-covered summit the rock drops into the coralligenous zone, where canyon walls and ledges between roughly 24 and 36 metres are draped in dense forests of large red gorgonians (Paramuricea clavata) alongside yellow and white gorgonians. The site also holds a rare colony of Savalia savaglia (gold coral), and is the most spectacular and most photographed part of the only fully submerged marine protected area in Italy.

A fully submerged offshore shoal about 5 nautical miles out in the open Tyrrhenian Sea, so it has no land shelter and surface conditions govern access. It is most exposed across the open south-western quadrant: the SW Libeccio (the dominant Tyrrhenian heavy-weather wind-wave) and the open S, W and NW windows, with the SSE end of the Scirocco's long African fetch also reaching in. The Roman coast sits only about 5 nautical miles away across the landward arc, so the N through E sectors are strongly fetch-blocked and the shoal is dived only on calm days.
