About This Site
The most popular wreck dive of the northern Lazio / Rome coast, off Civitavecchia near Riva di Traiano. The Asia is a roughly 56 m steam dredger (built in the Netherlands in 1956, deliberately scuttled on 4 April 1987 to deter bottom trawling) that sits upright in sailing trim on open sand, cut into two sections. The stern, with its winches and twin smokestacks, is the standard recreational target at about 35-37 m, while the broken bow lies a few hundred metres away at roughly 44-46 m for technical and experienced divers. Decades on the bottom have turned the steel into a fish-rich artificial reef and the go-to wreck for Rome-based clubs.

Open offshore wreck on sand off the northern Lazio coast, with the Italian mainland blocking the eastern sectors (E-NE) and the full Tyrrhenian fetch open to the south and west. The dominant wave exposure is the Libeccio (SW) and the long-fetch Scirocco (S-SE), with the Mistral/Tramontana (NW) also reaching the site across the Tyrrhenian; being microtidal, conditions are wind-wave driven rather than swell driven. Boats only run when the SW-to-S sectors are calm, so the wreck is a fair-weather dive despite its depth.
