Il Nord Ovest sits on the northwest-facing point of the Calafuria reef, so the Tuscan mainland and the Calafuria cliffs to the east and north (the Torre di Calafuria is only about 0.5 km to the NE, and the Antignano-Livorno headland juts out ~2 km to the N) fully shadow the landward sectors, while the W-SW-NW arc is wide open to the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Sea. In the microtidal Mediterranean there is no true ocean swell, so conditions are driven by local wind over the fetch: the SW Libeccio builds the heaviest seas on this coast, with the W Ponente and the NW Maestrale/Mistral adding chop straight onto the exposed point, and the S sector staying largely open. The Romito and Quercianella points to the SE give some shelter from Scirocco, which tends to blow offshore here. When the Libeccio or Maestrale is running the boat dive is called off. Tide plays no meaningful role.
