Scuba diving at Il Nord Ovest (Calafuria) in Livorno

About This Site
Il Nord Ovest is the single most-cited wall dive on the Calafuria reef, the stretch of sandstone (arenaria) coast between Quercianella and Livorno, and is regarded as the signature "deep wall" of the Livorno coast. The boat moors at about 18 m on the northwest-facing point of the reef, and divers follow the wall down its right-hand side, quickly reaching 26 m where the drop-off becomes an explosion of life: colonies of red coral in bloom tucked under the rock overhangs and lobsters, some of good size, wedged in the cracks. Continuing down the sandstone wall the site bottoms out around 40 m, where red gorgonians fan out in the deep. What sets the dive apart is the density of basket stars (Astrospartus mediterraneus) clinging to the wall even at moderate depth. Reaching the gorgonians at 40 m puts it firmly beyond recreational no-deco limits, so it is a dive for experienced divers only, with a Deep specialty as the minimum and nitrox strongly recommended.

Il Nord Ovest sits on the northwest-facing point of the Calafuria reef, so the Tuscan mainland and the Calafuria cliffs to the east and north (the Torre di Calafuria is only about 0.5 km to the NE, and the Antignano-Livorno headland juts out ~2 km to the N) fully shadow the landward sectors, while the W-SW-NW arc is wide open to the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Sea. In the microtidal Mediterranean there is no true ocean swell, so conditions are driven by local wind over the fetch: the SW Libeccio builds the heaviest seas on this coast, with the W Ponente and the NW Maestrale/Mistral adding chop straight onto the exposed point, and the S sector staying largely open. The Romito and Quercianella points to the SE give some shelter from Scirocco, which tends to blow offshore here. When the Libeccio or Maestrale is running the boat dive is called off. Tide plays no meaningful role.
