The Calafuria/Romito cliff promontory faces the open Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and southwest, while the Tuscan mainland completely shadows the landward eastern sectors. The dominant exposure is the SW Libeccio, which builds the heaviest seas on this coast, with the W and partly the NW Mistral/Tramontana wind-waves adding chop; in the microtidal Mediterranean there is no real ocean swell, so conditions are driven by local wind over a limited fetch. When the Libeccio or Mistral is up the boat dive is called off and the inner cave should not be attempted, as surge pushes through the swim-throughs and stirs the silt.
