About This Site
Calafuria is Livorno's iconic shore-diving zone, a roughly 3 km stretch of sandstone (arenaria) cliff coast immediately south of the city where the seabed drops away fast from the wall to 40-52 m. Multiple named routes radiate from the entry cove below the Ponte di Calafuria road bridge and the La Torre di Calafuria diving center: Parete dello Gnomo (a vertical wall with a closed grotto at about 22-23 m holding a small gnome statue, a local landmark), La Benna, Monolite/Giro dello Scemo, L'Isola and La Grotta. The coralligenous walls are famous for red coral starting around 16-18 m, yellow sponges and, on the deeper rocky outcrops, red and white gorgonians. It is regarded as one of Italy's best land-entry dive areas and works for everything from training fins-on dives in the cove to deep technical descents.

The Calafuria cliff faces the open Ligurian Sea to the west-southwest, so the eastern and northern landward sectors are fully blocked by the sandstone coast while the W-SW-NW sectors are exposed. The dominant troublemakers are the Libeccio (SW) and Maestrale/Mistral (NW) wind-waves, which build surge along the wall and stir up the inshore water; the Scirocco (SE) blows largely offshore here and actually flattens the sea, improving visibility, whereas a fresh Maestrale (NW) drops it. Microtidal Mediterranean conditions mean tide plays no role.
