Scuba diving at Strombolicchio in Stromboli

About This Site
The signature dive of Stromboli: a dramatic 49 m volcanic sea stack, the eroded ancient vent of an old volcano, standing about 2 km NE of the island and topped by a small 1925 lighthouse. Vertical basalt walls drop straight from the surface to 45-55 m, with two classic routes - the very vertical SE wall and the crevice- and fissure-rich SW wall. Fed by the strong northern current, the walls are famous for their forests of fire-red and golden gorgonians and outstanding water clarity, and the site is consistently cited as one of the most beautiful dives in the lower Tyrrhenian.

A free-standing volcanic sea stack in open water 2 km NE of Stromboli, so almost every sector is exposed. The seaward N–NE–E–SE arc takes the full Tyrrhenian wind-wave fetch, including the strong northern current that drapes the walls in red gorgonians and the long-fetch Scirocco from the S-SE. Only the SW quadrant facing the bulk of Stromboli island gets partial shelter, and the SW-facing flank is where boats anchor in the calmest conditions.
