The site sits on the open NW flank of Stromboli directly beneath the Sciara del Fuoco chute, facing the open Tyrrhenian Sea with no landmass between it and the NW-N horizon, so it takes the full force of NW-NNW wind-waves (Maestrale/Mistral type) and the N Tramontana. The bulk of the island shields the entire SE-S-SW landward arc, and the warm S-SE Scirocco arriving from Africa is blocked by the cone, so southerly weather leaves the wall relatively calm. Because Mediterranean swell is short, wind-driven fetch rather than groundswell, conditions here can flip from glassy to undiveable within hours of the NW wind building.
