Scuba diving at Secca di Scirocco in Stromboli

Secca di Scirocco

GREAT
StromboliBoat
About This Site
A pointed submerged monolith rising from deep water in the channel between Stromboli and the Strombolicchio sea stack, cresting at about 20 metres and plunging perpendicularly into the blue to beyond 50 metres. Its elliptical walls - steepest on the eastern flank - are completely sheathed in enormous red gorgonian fans fed by the persistent northern current, making it one of the most spectacular gorgonian-wall dives in the entire Aeolian archipelago. This is a deep, advanced dive with frequent current, run only when the sea is calm and reserved for experienced divers.

A submerged volcanic pinnacle in the channel just off the northeast corner of Stromboli, with the bulk of the island lying to the southwest-to-west and sheltering that quadrant from swell. It faces open Tyrrhenian Sea across the whole eastern and southern arc: the SE Scirocco that gives the secca its name builds the longest fetch here, and the E, SE and S sectors all take swell unobstructed. The northern and northwestern sectors are largely open toward the Calabrian Tyrrhenian, with only the small Strombolicchio sea stack clipping the NE and the island's northern tip trimming the WNW; the NW Maestrale reaches the pinnacle little obstructed. With so little shelter, the site is workable only in settled seas.
