The Sara lies in Fyki Bay on the north coast of Othonoi, so the bulk of the island shields the entire southern arc — the S, SSW, SW, SE and SSE sectors are effectively blocked by the landmass immediately to the south, and the island's east and west halves shadow the E and W sectors as well. The exposed window is the north, opening onto the open Ionian at the mouth of the Adriatic: N through NNW and NNE face the longest fetch and carry the dominant swell and NW/N wind-wave energy that reaches the site, with the island's headlands only partly diffracting the NE and NW flanks. As microtidal Mediterranean water there is no meaningful tide, but because the bay faces the open sea to the north, any northerly blow or northwest Ionian swell builds surface chop and surge over the wreck and is the main reason trips to this remote site are weather-dependent.
