About This Site
Sec de la Gabinière is the signature reef dive of Port-Cros National Park, Europe's first marine national park, and arguably the most famous dive of the entire Hyères islands area. A large rocky pinnacle rises to within about 12 m of the surface just south of the Gabinière islet, then plunges in deep faults, drop-offs and gorgonian-covered ridges to 40 m and beyond. Sitting inside the fully protected integral reserve, it holds one of the densest concentrations of large dusky groupers in the western Mediterranean and is frequently dived as a current-swept drift.

Warnings for today

  • Strong winds expected

The pinnacle sits just south of the Gabinière islet, which lies south-east of Port-Cros island, so the N, NW and NNW sectors are shadowed by land and the site is only slightly affected by the Mistral (NW). It is fully open and notably exposed to the easterly wind and to the warm Scirocco (E through S), which drive the dominant wind-waves here over open Mediterranean fetch. A strong, tide-independent current frequently runs through the passage and sweeps NW toward Porquerolles, making this a committing drift dive.
