About This Site
Le Grec is the wreck of the Sagona, a Panamanian-flagged steam cargo ship laden with wine that struck a residual WWII mine on 3 December 1945 while crossing the passage between Port-Cros and Porquerolles, broke in two and sank immediately. The second great wreck of the area alongside the neighbouring Donator, it lies in the open Grande Passe roughly 1,600 m east of the Petit Sarranier rock. The stern section stands upright and intact on its keel, separated by some 50 m from the completely dislocated bow, and now wears thick concretion. A deep dive running from the superstructure at about 35 m down to the propeller near 47 m, frequently swept by very strong current and marked at the surface by descent buoys; classically paired with the Donator for experienced wreck divers.

Warnings for today

  • Strong winds expected

The wreck lies mid-channel in the Grande Passe between Porquerolles and Port-Cros, open to the Mediterranean over its southern arc where Scirocco (S-SE) builds the longest-fetch waves and Libeccio (SW) adds swell. Porquerolles island and the Petit Sarranier rock to the west kill the western sectors almost completely, while the Giens peninsula to the northwest blunts the Mistral and Port-Cros to the east screens the E sector. The passage funnels tide- and wind-driven flow, producing the frequently very strong current the site is known for.
