The wreck lies in open Atlantic off Cabo Espichel, on the southwest-facing foot of the cape. The cape landmass sits to the north and northwest, shielding the site from the N, NNE, NE and NNW and giving partial shelter to the WNW and NW where the west-facing cliffs of the cape start to intrude. The fully exposed window is the open ocean to the S, SSW, SW and W — the arc that also takes the dominant W-NW Atlantic groundswell as it wraps around the headland, along with any southerly wind sea. The Sesimbra coast running east gives partial cover to the ENE and E. As a result the site is calm in northerly and easterly winds but is quickly rendered undiveable by W-SW swell or a southerly blow, which is why it is so weather-dependent.
