About This Site
Pedra da Anixa is the flagship biodiversity dive of the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park within the Arrábida Natural Park. A roughly 40 m-long rocky outcrop rising abruptly from a barren sandy plain about 250 m off Portinho da Arrábida, its complex of platforms, crevices and cavities creates a dense patchwork of micro-habitats. Over 70 fish species and a wealth of invertebrates have been recorded here, making it the marine-life highlight of the Lisbon and Setúbal coast.

The Serra da Arrábida ridge rising directly behind Portinho da Arrábida shields the site from the dominant NW Atlantic groundswell and the prevailing northerly Nortada wind, leaving the landward (N-NW-NE) sectors completely blocked. Because the rock sits roughly 250 m offshore on the open sandy plain, its south-facing aspect is exposed to swell and wind-wave from the S through SW. Conditions are usually calm and only deteriorate during rarer southerly storms that wrap into the bay.
