Sitting on the south-facing Arrábida coast east of Sesimbra, the site is shadowed from the dominant W-NW Atlantic groundswell by the Setúbal Peninsula landmass, which keeps it sheltered and calm most of the year. Real exposure comes only from the southern sectors (SE through SW), so southerly winds and the rarer south swell are what build wave action here. Northerly and westerly winds are blocked by the headland and high Serra da Arrábida behind the bay.
