About This Site
A perennially popular, all-levels dive a short boat ride from Sesimbra marina on the sheltered Arrábida coast. The centrepiece is a large rock crowned by a lion-shaped profile, pierced by an arch at about 6 metres that divers swim through; the passage is often clouded with dense schools of seabream and pouting. Calm, shallow and easy, it is one of the most dived sites on the Lisbon coast and is usually paired with the neighbouring 'Jardim das Gorgónias.'

Sitting on the south-facing Arrábida coast east of Sesimbra, the site is shadowed from the dominant W-NW Atlantic groundswell by the Setúbal Peninsula landmass, which keeps it sheltered and calm most of the year. Real exposure comes only from the southern sectors (SE through SW), so southerly winds and the rarer south swell are what build wave action here. Northerly and westerly winds are blocked by the headland and high Serra da Arrábida behind the bay.
