About This Site
Nikouria Cavern, also called Agios Pavlos or the Big Cave, is the signature site of Amorgos and the most-dived spot on the island. A short boat hop from Agios Pavlos beach reaches the small islet of Nikouria, where an open cavern is carved into the wall: a wide lower entrance around 18m and a top opening at roughly 8-12m frame a view out toward the blue of the open sea. The walls are plastered with bright purple, red and yellow encrusting sponges and false corals, making this the iconic Amorgos macro and wide-angle dive. The open layout and shallow profile suit divers of all levels, from snorkelers to experienced photographers.

Warnings for today

  • Strong winds expected

The cavern sits on the east side of Nikouria islet, in the channel between the islet and the northwest coast of Amorgos, with its only real fetch window across the NE-to-N arc onto the open Aegean. The Amorgos mainland close to the SE and S (Agios Pavlos beach lies about 0.6 km to the S) blocks the whole E-through-SW sector, so Scirocco and Ionian-style S-SW seas cannot build here. The summer Meltemi (N-NW) reaches the entrance through the northern part of that window, and a short WSW bight fetch is what builds surge at the wide lower entrance when SW-W winds get up; the bulk of the islet to the W and NW otherwise shelters the site.
