Scuba diving at Deep Blue Wall in Amorgos

Deep Blue Wall

GOOD
AmorgosBoat
About This Site
Amorgos's premier 'big blue' dive: a dramatic vertical wall off the western tip of Nikouria island that drops from about 18 m past 40 m and continues well beyond into the deep for tech divers, giving an almost skydiving-like sense of weightlessness over the void. A large but shallow cavern with high walls opens in the wall at roughly 25-26 m, and an ancient amphora rests on the wall edge, said to be a relic from a ship lost in the 322 BC Battle of Amorgos. It is a favourite of advanced and deep divers, with the recreational profile typically capped at 40 m.

Warnings for today

  • Strong winds expected

The wall sits off the western tip of Nikouria and faces the open Naxos-Amorgos channel, so the WSW, W, WNW and NW sectors take full wind-wave fetch, with the exposed window running round to NNW. The bulk of Nikouria island and the neighbouring NW coast of Amorgos shield the eastern half (NE through SE), while the Amorgos main-island spine running away to the southwest partly shelters the S and SW flank. The summer Meltemi (N-NW) wraps around the western point and drives the strongest chop on the NW-N side; there is no real swell in this microtidal Aegean setting, and dives are simply called off on strong Meltemi days.
