About This Site
The Blue Caves are a string of sea caves, arches and swim-throughs carved into the white limestone cliffs at Cape Skinari, the northernmost tip of Zakynthos. They are world-famous for the electric-blue light cast when sunlight refracts off the bright sandy bottom and back through the clear water, an effect that peaks mid-morning. Accessible only by boat from the nearby harbour of Agios Nikolaos, the site works equally well as a bucket-list snorkel and a shallow cavern dive, with the option to drop down the outer wall for a deeper boat dive. The combination of crystal-clear Ionian visibility, easy depths and dramatic rock architecture makes it a beginner-friendly highlight of the island.

The caves sit on the north-facing tip of Cape Skinari, the island's northernmost point, opening to the channel between Zakynthos and Kefalonia. The bulk of the island shelters the southern and western sectors, so the dominant NW Ionian swell only partly wraps the cape; the real exposure is to northerly winds (the Ionian Maestro) and N-NW wind-waves, which kick up surge inside the arches. Warm Scirocco winds from the south are fully blocked by the landmass.
