The wall faces south-west into the open Ionian off the high cliffs of the Marathia (Keri) peninsula, so the steep cliffs and the island bulk to the north and east block the prevailing summer NW Maestro/Meltemi wind, leaving the landward sectors calm. The real exposure is the open south-through-west arc: a warm Scirocco from the south builds the largest waves over the long African fetch, while the SW-WSW sector takes the full open-Ionian wind-wave and a Libeccio. Being microtidal Mediterranean there is negligible tide, but a current can wrap around Cape Marathia and the swim-through tunnel and arch amplify any surge that does reach the wall.
