B-17 Flying Fortress Wreck

GREAT
CalviBoat
About This Site
The iconic dive of Calvi and one of the most famous wreck dives in the Mediterranean: an intact American B-17 Flying Fortress bomber that ditched on 14 February 1944 after being hit by German fighters, now sitting upright on white sand at the foot of the Calvi citadel. The 23 m long airframe with its 32 m wingspan is remarkably complete, with all four propeller engines, both wings and the open cockpit clearly visible. Lying at 25 to 28 m it is an Advanced/40 m level dive, reached by a short 5 to 10 minute boat ride from Calvi harbour.

The wreck rests in the north-facing Bay of Calvi, sheltered to the south, southwest and west by the Corsican mainland, the citadel headland and the Revellata peninsula, so those landward sectors are effectively blocked. The bay mouth opens onto the Ligurian Sea across the N-to-NE arc, and the longest fetch runs N-NNE toward the distant mainland coast, making northerly wind-waves the dominant exposure; the eastern shore of the gulf sits close by, so the E-SE sectors are short-fetch and quickly sheltered. The NW Libeccio/Mistral wraps partially around the Revellata peninsula, which shades the WNW-NW approach, but can still build surface chop. Being a microtidal Mediterranean site with no real ocean swell, conditions are governed by these regional winds rather than tide.
