Scuba diving at Taxiarchis Wreck in Santorini

Taxiarchis Wreck

About This Site
The Taxiarchis Wreck is Santorini's signature "dive on the volcano" - a roughly 27-30 m steel passenger ship that sank in 1981 in Taxiarchis Bay, on the active Nea Kameni cone in the heart of the caldera. The vessel went down accidentally after a pumping error by a crew member and now sits largely intact on the dark lava-formed seabed beside the bay's cliff-set chapel. Shallow and well-preserved, it is the most photographed wreck on the island and pairs naturally with the surrounding volcanic walls and hot-spring-warmed water, making it a favourite for beginner-to-intermediate divers.

Warnings for today

  • Strong winds expected

The wreck lies in Taxiarchis Bay on the southeast flank of the Nea Kameni cone, deep inside the Santorini caldera, so there is no real ocean swell at any time. The volcanic cone rises immediately to the west and northwest and blocks those sectors hardest, while the bay opens across the sheltered caldera basin toward the east and southeast. The only meaningful exposure is summer Meltemi (N-NW) wind-chop, which the cone's northern shoulder only partly screens, plus the short fetch generated across the caldera itself.
