About This Site
Indian Rock, locally also called Marinato, is the signature cave and swim-through dive of the southwest Akrotiri coast and an iconic Santorini landmark whose volcanic profile, when seen from the right angle, resembles a human face (nicknamed after the famed excavator of the prehistoric Akrotiri settlement). Beneath the rock, lava caverns, archways and canyons carved by the Minoan eruption form a dramatic playground of overhangs and light beams in roughly 12 to 22 metres of clear water. It dives as an intermediate boat site: easy depths and warm, calm conditions, but with overhead cavern sections that reward good buoyancy and a torch.

Set on the southwest tip of Santorini between the Akrotiri Lighthouse and Mesa Pigadia, the rock faces southwest toward open sea. The island shadows the northern and eastern sectors, so it sits on the lee side of the dominant summer Meltemi (N-NW), which is what makes it the area's reliable go-to site. Its main exposure is from the south through southwest, where the warm Scirocco and southerly wind-waves have the longest fetch; surge inside the lava caverns and swim-throughs picks up noticeably when a southerly is running.
