Sykia Cave

About This Site
Sykia (Sikia) Cave is a spectacular half-collapsed sea cave on the southwest coast of Milos, often called the 'Emerald Cave.' Part of the roof has fallen in to form a natural skylight, and sunbeams pour through the open ceiling to light the cavern and its clear water in an emerald-blue glow that is one of the island's most striking underwater scenes. The arch-shaped entrance is roughly 20 m wide and 5 m high, large enough for small boats to pass through, and the dive combines shallow cavern light play with the cave walls and surrounding reef. It is a standard stop on the Dive in Milos / west-coast boat itinerary alongside nearby Kleftiko.

West/southwest-facing sea cave on the exposed SW coast of Milos, where the island's bulk to the north and east blocks the dominant summer Meltemi (N-NW) wind. The open-water exposure is to the W-SW, which catches Aegean wind-waves and any Libeccio (SW) swell that wraps onto this coast. Inside the cavern, even a moderate swell amplifies into surge, so the site is best dived in calm, settled conditions.
