Scuba diving at Kleftiko in Milos

About This Site
Kleftiko is the signature dive of Milos and the island's single most iconic seascape, a labyrinth of brilliant-white volcanic rock arches, tunnels and sea caves rising straight out of turquoise water. Reachable only by boat on the remote south-west tip, the dive threads through shallow caverns and swim-throughs lit by dramatic shafts of light, with most of the action between about 12 and 22 metres. It is the headline site of every Milos dive operator and daily boat cruise, prized as much for the sculptural rockscape and luminous water as for its fish life.

Set on the remote south-west tip of Milos, Kleftiko's bays and rock arches open to the south and south-east toward open water, with the west-south-west flank partly cut off by the island's own south-west cape. The Milos landmass shadows the site from the dominant summer Meltemi blowing out of the north and north-west, so divable conditions are common when the rest of the island is wind-blown. The exposed south-facing sectors take southerly Scirocco wind-waves and any S-SE swell, which push surge through the shallow caverns and can shut the site down or stir up sand in the swim-throughs.
