About This Site
The Sunken City of Olous is the submerged remains of an ancient Minoan-era port city that drowned beneath the shallows of the Poros isthmus, most likely after an earthquake-driven subsidence around the 2nd century AD. It sits in the protected lagoon that links Elounda to the Kolokytha (Spinalonga) peninsula, and is the most popular and accessible dive and snorkel in the Elounda-Agios Nikolaos area. Wall foundations, harbour structures and scattered pottery fragments lie in clear, very shallow water, making it a genuine archaeology-over-fauna dive suitable for all levels.

The ruins bay lies just south of the Poros causeway and opens directly onto the Gulf of Mirabello through a southeast-to-south window, the only sector carrying meaningful swell. The Kolokytha (Spinalonga) peninsula wraps around to block everything from the north through east — including the dominant northerly Aegean Meltemi — while the Elounda shoreline shuts down the west and southwest. Only southeasterly to southerly weather pushes wave energy up the gulf into these shallows, and even then the site stays calm and snorkel-friendly for most of the year.
