Dia Island (Petalidi)

About This Site
Petalidi is the premier wall dive at uninhabited Dia Island, a Natura 2000 reserve roughly 7-9 nautical miles north of Heraklion and Agia Pelagia. The site wraps the seaward north-west face of the small Petalidi (Glaronisi) islet off Dia's NW corner, where dramatic vertical walls and drop-offs fall through exceptionally clear water from a shallow 7-8 m shoulder down past 30 m. The seascape is a wild jumble of huge boulders punctuated by small swim-through caves, and visibility regularly tops 50 m for most of the year. Depths suit a broad range of certified divers, though the wall profile, boat-only access and Meltemi exposure make it a comfortable intermediate outing. It is usually paired on a day trip with the Paksimadi site on Dia's east side.

The site sits on the seaward, north-west face of the Petalidi (Glaronisi) islet off Dia's NW corner, so the open Cretan Sea to the N, NW and W is fully exposed while the bulk of Dia island shadows the southern and south-eastern sectors. The dominant hazard is the summer Meltemi, the strong N-NW Aegean wind, which drives wind-wave chop straight onto the walls and can cancel trips on peak days. Calm, settled weather (or a southerly Scirocco that the island blocks) gives the flat, glass-clear conditions the site is known for.
