About This Site
The iconic WWII aircraft wreck of central Crete and the signature dive of the Heraklion/Hersonissos coast. A German Messerschmitt Bf-109 fighter, popularly tied to the 1941 Battle of Crete (though the airframe is often identified as a later G-6/F-4 variant), rests upside down on a sandy bottom about 800 m offshore north of Anissaras/Hersonissos. The main fuselage and wings sit around 24 m with the cockpit, machine guns and ammunition belts still visible; the broken-off tail section lies roughly 50 m away at about 30 m. Depth, occasional current and variable visibility make it an experienced-diver, bucket-list wreck rather than a casual outing.

An open offshore site on the north coast of Crete, roughly 1-2 km out over sand with the island shielding the entire southern arc. The dominant exposure is the summer Meltemi blowing N-NW straight down the open Cretan Sea, plus general N-NE wind-wave fetch; with no headland to leeward, the wreck is fully exposed whenever the Meltemi is up. Southerly Scirocco swell is largely blocked by the Cretan landmass, so the calmest windows come with light or southerly winds.
