About This Site
Secca di Formicoli is one of the most-visited shoals off the Capo Vaticano promontory on Calabria's Costa degli Dei. A chain of large and small boulders rises from a sandy, Posidonia-fringed bottom roughly 18-20 m deep and runs offshore to an outer head at 27-30 m, forming endless crevices, small caves and overhangs. The moderate depth and easy profile make it the classic all-levels Capo Vaticano reef dive; the rocks here are also thought to overlie remains of an ancient Roman anchorage (the Forum Herculis landing).

The shoal sits a few hundred metres off the west-facing Formicoli shore of the Capo Vaticano promontory, with the open Tyrrhenian Sea to the west, so it is exposed to the W-SW wind-waves driven by the Libeccio, which has the longest fetch here. The Calabrian coast to the east shelters the landward sectors completely, and the Capo Vaticano headland to the south gives some protection from southerly Scirocco swell. Conditions are diveable on most calm-to-moderate summer days but a fresh Libeccio quickly raises chop and cuts visibility.
