About This Site
A signposted underwater archaeological route in the Capo Rizzuto Marine Protected Area, set in the shallows immediately south of the Aragonese castle of Le Castella. The trail is a roughly 400 m linear circuit at only 4-5 m depth, within about 200 m of shore, linking around 15 marked points of Roman-era remains: a rock-cut staircase, two horrea (granaries), a quarry crucible and worked stone blocks left from ancient construction. Created in 2005 with the Calabrian archaeological superintendency, it is the most accessible signature dive of the reserve and is just as suited to snorkellers as to divers. The seabed lies over a Posidonia meadow and records how this stretch of sea was once dry land.

The trail lies in shallow water just south of the Le Castella peninsula on the Ionian coast, facing the open sea through an ESE-to-W arc centred on the south and south-west. It takes a direct hit from the Scirocco (S-SE) and from open Ionian swell out of the S-SW, which build the largest waves here. The Le Cannella coast a few kilometres to the east knocks down easterly seas, while the Aragonese castle headland and the Calabrian mainland shadow the northern and north-western sectors. Because it is only 4-5 m deep and within 200 m of shore, even a moderate sea makes it surgy and turbid, so it is dived in calm, settled conditions.
