The secca sits in open Tyrrhenian water just off the south side of the Capo Vaticano promontory, whose landmass blocks the whole landward arc from the northeast through east to the Calabrian mainland. Its exposed face looks out across the S-to-W-to-NW open sea toward the Aeolian Islands, so the southerly Ostro and the Libeccio (SW) build the long-fetch wind-wave chop that governs boat access; the Scirocco (SE) is short-fetch here, cut down by the nearby Nicotera coast only about 10 km away. Being microtidal Mediterranean there is effectively no swell or tidal stream, only locally focused wind-driven current over the deep ridge, and because the cap sits at nearly 38 m surface conditions affect the boat ride and shotline far more than the dive itself.
