The Robuste II lies in the middle of Golfe-Juan bay, which is well enclosed by land on most sides: the Vallauris and Golfe-Juan mainland shuts off the whole N-NE arc, Cap d'Antibes to the east screens the E-ESE, and the Cannes headland and Pointe de la Croisette close the W-WNW. To the south the Îles de Lérins (Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat) sit across the bay mouth, shadowing the SSW and SW. The genuinely open fetch is the SE-to-SSE channel between Cap d'Antibes and the eastern tip of Sainte-Marguerite, which faces the open Ligurian Sea — so easterly and south-easterly winds and the occasional southerly swell are what build waves here, while the Mistral and Tramontane from the NW blow offshore off the land and leave the site calm. There is no true ocean groundswell on this microtidal coast; surface conditions are governed by local wind-sea, and the site is best worked in anything from a westerly to a northerly.
