Scuba diving at Punta de la Mona in Costa del Sol

About This Site
Punta de la Mona is the signature dive of the Costa Tropical and the deepest rocky-bottom dive along the Granada coast. The seaward face of the Punta de la Mona cape drops as a near-vertical wall from about 22 m down past 40 m, draped in fields of the rare yellow/orange coral Astroides calycularis - a feature found in only a handful of places worldwide - with a candelabra-coral (Dendrophyllia ramea) garden in the deeper section. Strong, variable currents and 10-30 m visibility make it an advanced must-do for nearly every operator working out of La Herradura and Marina del Este.

The dive is on the seaward south-to-southwest wall of the Punta de la Mona headland, so the open Mediterranean fetch from the S, SSW and SE hits it directly while the cape itself shadows the landward N-NW-NE sectors. As a microtidal Med site the main concern is wind-wave, not swell: the strong easterly Levante wraps the cape's east flank and the long Alborán fetch from the SE-S builds the working seas here, while the Poniente westerly is partly blocked by the point. Calm-day diving favours light or northerly (offshore) winds.
