About This Site
The area's go-to wreck dive: a 10-12 m wooden boat, deliberately ballasted with stones and scuttled on a 24 m sandy bottom off San Cristóbal beach, southwest of the Peñón del Santo at Almuñécar. The timbers are now largely broken down and dispersed, but a scour pit that formed along the old starboard side concentrates marine life and gives a welcome change of scenery from the area's rocky reefs. Known locally as the 'pecio de los torpedos' for the electric rays that gather here in summer, it is a classic Advanced Open Water boat dive.

Sheltered from the north and west by the Almuñécar coastline and the Peñones de San Cristóbal rocks rising to the NE, so the landward sectors are effectively blocked. The site lies open to the south and southeast, where the longest Mediterranean fetch produces the largest wind-waves driven by Levante (E) and warm Scirocco/Sirocco (S-SE) winds; a southwesterly Libeccio swell also reaches the sandy bottom. Being a microtidal Mediterranean site there is no meaningful ocean groundswell, only locally generated wind-wave.
