About This Site
Le Mugel is the signature shore dive of La Ciotat, entered from the pebble beach of the Anse du Petit Mugel inside the Calanques National Park at the foot of the Bec de l'Aigle. A gentle 0-20 m rocky-and-sandy point laced with Posidonia meadows, it is a classic site for first dives, baptisms and snorkelling, and is best known for clusters of yellow gorgonians sitting unusually shallow at 7-10 m. Sheltered from the Mistral by the towering cliff, it is one of the most dependable easy dives on this stretch of the Med coast.

The Anse du Petit Mugel opens to the east and south-east toward La Ciotat bay, with the massive Bec de l'Aigle cliff rising to the west, north-west and north. That headland completely blocks the Mistral (NW) and all northerly and westerly winds, so the cove stays diveable when the rest of the coast is blown out and serves as a reliable fair-weather backup for local clubs. Its only real exposure is to easterly and south-easterly Marin/Scirocco fetch driving into the cove mouth, and even that is partly checked by Ile Verte sitting across the south-east to southerly approach; a strong E-SE blow brings surge over the shallow rocky point.
