About This Site
An iconic, must-do La Ciotat boat dive on the Canonnier Nord reef, in the passage between the Bec de l'Aigle and Île Verte. The site is a roughly 10 m long horizontal tunnel at about 14 m, sheltering a marble statue of the Virgin Mary placed in 1989 by local skipper Gabriel 'Gaby' Berenger in thanks for watching over the divers in his care - hence the popular name 'Grotte à Gaby'. The short, well-lit passage is safe and accessible even to level-1 (Open Water) divers, its roof and walls encrusted with red coral and brightly coloured sponges, and it has become a place of quiet pilgrimage where divers leave small mementos. The surrounding ground is a vast posidonia meadow broken by relief, crevices and cavities that deepen gently seaward.

The tunnel sits in the channel between the Bec de l'Aigle headland and Île Verte, so the landward sectors are well sheltered: the high Cap Canaille / Bec de l'Aigle massif blocks the NW Mistral and the W-N sectors, while Île Verte screens the E. The open exposure is to the S and SW, where Mediterranean wind-waves driven by the southerly Marin/Scirocco and the SW Libeccio build over the bay; it is a reliable bad-weather choice when an east wind is blowing. Inside the cavern any S-SW swell is amplified into surge.
