About This Site
One of the two most iconic dives of the Medes Islands marine reserve and arguably the single most famous on the Costa Brava. A roughly 30 m long, 5 m wide tunnel pierces Meda Gran north-to-south at Punta de la Galera, with branching side caves, pillars and dramatic light shafts that make it a signature photography dive. The tunnel is wide and bright enough to see the exit throughout, and the surrounding walls are draped in red and yellow gorgonians. Diving inside the reserve is regulated (no try-dives, permits and a daily diver cap) which keeps the marine life exceptional.

The tunnel pierces Meda Gran at Punta de la Galera on the island's exposed eastern point, with the bulk of the island shielding the site from the strong NW Tramontana that dominates the Costa Brava. Exposure is concentrated on the E through S sectors and peaks from the ESE-SE, where the easterly Llevant (the dominant big-sea source on this coast) and warm SE Scirocco reach the tunnel mouth and the exposed gorgonian wall. The Med is effectively tideless, so swell and recent wind, not tide, govern conditions.
