The Variglioni break the surface off the south-east tip of Isola dei Cavoli, so the bulk of the island and Cape Carbonara shield the landward N-NW-W sectors, where the strong Mistral (Maestrale) is largely blocked. The site faces open Mediterranean water to the south and south-east, taking the full brunt of the warm Scirocco (S-SE, longest African fetch and biggest waves) and a strong oblique hit from the Libeccio (SW). With no real ocean swell in this microtidal sea, divable conditions hinge entirely on these regional winds, and operators cancel the crossing when the Scirocco blows hard.
