About This Site
Cova dels Arcs is the Costa Blanca's signature cave dive, tucked into the cliff at the southern end of Cala del Moraig near El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, between Moraira and Jávea. Two great natural rock arches — carved over some 60,000 years — form the cathedral-like mouth of a sea cave that is the outlet of the Riu Blanc, reputedly Spain's longest underground river, so freshwater seeping into the salt can produce a shimmering halocline and shafts of light in the cavern. The open, daylight section by the arches is an easy shallow dive suited to all levels, appearing on virtually every regional dive guide; the deeper flooded gallery running more than a kilometre inland is strictly for trained, equipped cave divers only.

Cova dels Arcs sits on a SE/E-facing cliff coast between Moraira and Jávea, its arches opening toward the open Mediterranean roughly to the ESE. The high Benitatxell massif behind it fully blocks the W-NW-SW sectors — the offshore Mistral/Tramuntana winds that dominate the region blow off the land here and generate little wave energy at the site. The exposed window is the E-SE quadrant: an onshore easterly Llevant, blowing straight into the cove with open fetch, is the defining hazard and builds surge in the cave mouth, with Scirocco SE swell also reaching in. To the N and NE the Cabo de la Nao headland provides partial shelter, so the site is calmest under the prevailing offshore and northerly winds and roughest in a sustained easterly.
