About This Site
The most iconic dive in Italy and one of the most famous in the world: a 2.5 m bronze statue of Christ, arms raised in blessing, set on the seabed of San Fruttuoso bay in August 1954 at roughly 17 m. The statue commemorates divers lost at sea and rests on a cement base inside the Portofino Marine Protected Area. Shallow, sheltered and easy, it is the canonical Portofino dive and suits beginners, while a "red route" along the adjacent wall drops to about 40 m for advanced divers. Expect to share the water with other groups in season.

The site lies inside the deep, north-cut bay of San Fruttuoso, whose cove opens to the south toward the open Ligurian Sea. The Portofino promontory and steep headlands fully shelter the landward sectors (N, NE, NW, E) from the Tramontana, so the bay is calm in most conditions. The open swell window is S-SSW-SW, straight down the cove: the Libeccio (SW) and Scirocco/Ostro (S-SE) have the longest fetch and push swell in cleanly. The western flank (WSW-W) is only partly shielded by the headland, so a hard Libeccio wraps in from that side as well.
