Scuba diving at Blue Cave in Alonissos

Blue Cave

AlonissosBoat
About This Site
A large, light-filled open-water sea cavern on the rugged northeast coast of Alonissos, inside the National Marine Park of the Northern Sporades. It is a true multi-level dive that suits everyone: beginners and divers on a leisurely profile stay shallow inside the bright, blue-lit cavern mouth, while advanced divers drop down the deeper outer wall that falls away into open water. It is one of the most-dived non-wreck sites in the marine park and a perennial favourite for its versatility and water clarity.

Set on the northeast-facing coast of Alonissos, the cavern looks out over the open NW Aegean, so the NE-to-E sectors take the full brunt of wind-driven sea while the island mass shelters all the landward W, SW and S quadrants. The dominant threat is the summer Meltemi (N-NW), which wraps around the headland and reaches the N/NNW sectors even though the cove itself faces northeast; on a stiff Meltemi day surge builds and the site is often called off. Being microtidal Mediterranean water there is no meaningful swell groundswell, only fetch-limited wind chop.
