South-facing rocky shoreline protected from west-northwest through north swell by the Palos Verdes Peninsula, with Point Fermin just east. Due-south energy arrives at near-full strength through the open window east of Catalina, with south-southeast close behind, and south-southwest through southwest also land with real force. Short-period southwest chop generated in the San Pedro Channel is common and strikes the point obliquely, and even west energy arrives along the coast at moderate-high strength. Entries are manageable in winter but hazardous during summer south swells. The thermal vents nearby can create warm patches, but the real hazard here is the powerful surge over shallow rocks.
