Scuba diving at Scoglio Rosso in Ponza Island

Scoglio Rosso

Ponza IslandBoat
About This Site
One of the most appreciated dives at Ponza, Scoglio Rosso is a short dinghy hop from the harbour, lying just outside the port in front of the Grotte di Pilato below Punta della Madonna. A colourful rock wall, rich in red and warm tones and packed with Mediterranean life, drops from near the surface to around 35 m, with a shallow shoal rising to within a couple of metres of the surface on its western side. Accessible to most certified divers in its shallower reaches yet rewarding for advanced divers along the deeper wall, the site occasionally serves up pelagic surprises and is a reliable, easy first dive of a Ponza trip.

A rock wall on Ponza's southeast flank, just outside the port below Punta della Madonna and the Grotte di Pilato, opening to the Tyrrhenian across an E-ESE-SE window. The main island mass and the Punta della Madonna headland block the W, NW, and N (the Mistral and Tramontana never reach the wall), and the southern part of the island toward Punta della Guardia shadows the S and SW, so a Libeccio from the SW is almost entirely cut off. Its real exposure is the Scirocco out of the SE, which has the longest Mediterranean fetch and pushes wind waves straight onto this open face.
