Scuba diving at Le Formiche in Ponza Island

Le Formiche

Ponza IslandBoat
About This Site
Arguably the most renowned dive on Ponza, Le Formiche is a line of outcropping rocks SE of the island off Punta della Madonna, named for their resemblance to a row of marching ants. From shallows the bottom drops through channels that begin around 30 m and descend over a slope past 50 m, offering profiles for every level. A famous natural arch smothered in orange parazoanthus precedes a colorful cave entrance near 18 m, and strong hydrodynamics on the NE side draw pelagic fish to a site celebrated for its biodiversity and color.

Le Formiche is an offshore rock cluster southeast of Ponza with the island shadowing the NW-W-N landward sectors, so it lies open to the Tyrrhenian fetch on the south and east. The S-SE quadrant carries the longest fetch and biggest waves under the warm Scirocco, while the Libeccio (SW) reaches the site obliquely. The exposed NE side stays in moving water and accelerated current, which feeds the pelagic action and the lush red-gorgonian growth.
